One of the biggest challenges people experience when using a CPAP machine for the first time is getting a CPAP mask to feel comfortable. Every manufacturer of CPAP machines seemingly has a different style of CPAP mask. The biggest reason for noncompliance in using a CPAP machine is a CPAP mask. There are a few things you can do to help you feel comfortable wearing your mask.

If you are one of those people that does not like your face being covered this process will be challenging to say the least. During your sleep study is likely that you were given a choice of two or 3 CPAP masks to try. If you’re like most people none of them felt comfortable at first. Whichever mask you decide to try make sure you adjust it before you lay down to try and sleep.

Essentially you need to make sure that your CPAP mask doesn’t feel like a intrusive device. You can do that by wearing the mask around your home for a few minutes, taking it off, and then putting it back on. Some of the newer styles of CPAP masks are designed to be less intrusive. The three most common types of masks are a nasal mask, a nasal pillow mask, and a full-face mask.

There is also a nasal prong type of mask that is becoming popular. If you are concerned about how your mask looks on your face, you need to get past that. There is not a CPAP mask available that is aesthetically pleasing.

You may find it necessary to try several masks before settling on one that is functional for you. Try not to give up thinking that you cannot find one that is suitable. The idea is to keep experimenting with different styles of mask until you find one that fits the bill for you. CPAP masks can cost $50 or $60 and up. Some can be substantially higher. A higher priced CPAP mask does not ensure comfort or functionality for everyone
